Why I Love Acme (and You Should Too) #HugeSale

Why I Love Acme (and You Should Too) #HugeSale

After being transplanted on the East Coast from growing up in the Midwest, there were many things I had to learn. There was an especially steep learning curve when it came to Philly Culture (ie: what it means to be a Philadelphian) that I had to navigate: learning the ins and outs (literally) to driving in center city; the appreciation of a "Steak Wit Whiz;" Philly sports fan culture (don't even get me started); the rich history (hello, US Constitution!); and more.

Upon moving here, I quickly learned that the place to shop for my groceries wasAcme Markets. And it wasn't long until I learned why! Here's a quick run down of my 5 favorite things about Acme:

MY 5 FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT ACME

1) Philadelphians call it "Ack-a-me." Don't mess with it.

2) No matter which Acme (ie: Ack-a-me) you shop at, they are all laid out teh same, so you can always find what you are looking for.

3) They always have a nice selection of produce from local farms!

4) They are the ONLY store that carries Ivin's Spiced Wafers. If you think you know spiced wafers, don't talk to me until you've grabbed the orange and brown box (NOT Sweetzels!).

5) They have great sales and promotions.

And right now, they are throwing a HUGE ANNIVERSARY SALE, with tons of great promotions and savings. My favorite is the Earthbound Farms Free Salad for a Year giveaway.

HECK YES! 75 lucky winners will get their greens for free for an entire year. And literally? ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ENTER. No hoops to jump through, no fire to walk over. Just submit your info an WHAM: you could be eating salad for a year.

Talk about a healthy win!

Southern Party with Aladdin

Southern Party with Aladdin

Prior to this whole 'mom life' believe it or not I was one heck of an entertainer.

I mean really!  From the invites to decor, drinks, down to the whole event!  I loved it.  Loved it so much that I actually did it almost monthly in some way. Whether having my girlfriends coming over or couples and even family.  I loved to entertain!

80 Years with Campbells

80 Years with Campbells

One of my favorite memories as a kid was watching the gigantic tv that sat in the floor.  It was like a massive piece of furniture that housed a small, slightly curved television screen and had really only 3 channels. Even better...the only remote in the house was getting me and my sisters up to turn the channels.

I remember that we as a family would sit and watch television for a very short time right after dinner. My mom would allow us to watch one show each during the week. My favorite show was ALWAYS Little House on the Prairie. As I would sit too close to the tv screen I remember those classic commercials that use to grab my attention. One that I remember as a child was the boy who was always eating his Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup with a picture perfect smile.

Campbell’s soup commercials are one of those brands that really stood the test of tv time. Their meaning has always stayed the same & their flavors gave the brand the soup advantage.  I know this is going to make you feel REALLY old. I can tell you - it did me when I first found out about it. Ready? Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup turns 80 years old this year. Yes. EIGHTY.  Double my age. So my grandparents grew up on it. My parents did too. It really is a blessing to see a company that has last that long in history when you really think about it!

Since Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup is celebrating 80 amazing years and I’d love to share with you some of the fun facts I’ve learned about Campbell over the years. Campbell’s Condensed Chicken Noodle soup was introduced in 1934 and was originally called “Chicken with Noodles”.  It’s rather funny how the name stuck to ‘chicken noodle’. That year a famous radio personality misread his copy & accidentally called it ‘Chicken Noodle’ soup. As a radio person I cringe at the thought of misreading an advertising spot - but for Campbell it was fabulous! They started getting big orders for their ‘new’ product and it was renamed ‘Chicken Noodle’. (Aside...I wonder if that radio person got a big endorsement deal after that? hahaha)

Anyway, Chicken Noodle is the top-selling soup for Campbell with more than 250 million cans sold a year. (That’s a 1.5 million miles of noodles, fyi.) Other tidbits - Frank Sinatra always asked for chicken and rice soup in his dressing rooms before going on stage. Andy Warhol found his inspiration to paint his ‘Campbell’s Soup Cans’ series because that’s what he ate for lunch every day for 20 years! Soup can be dated back to about 6000 B.C. and was first made out of hippo. (EW, right? ha) Last but not least...every can of Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup contains 32 feet of noodles.

How fun is that? Campbell history to the max.

Why don’t you ask The Wisest Kid in the Whole World on Facebook or Twitter if he knows any fun facts. You might be able to stump him!

Slam Dunk Your Sandwich with Campbells

Slam Dunk Your

Sandwich with Campbells

I remember as a kid on cold, snowy days my mom use to totally have a plan.

Campbell’s Condensed Tomato Soup and grilled cheese sandwiches.  If I close my eyes. I see it vividly in my memory. Walking home in a snow drift on a WAY TOO LONG ahem windy road after the bus dropped us off after school. If I remember correctly there is a vintage commercial with a kid walking home in the snow and into their moms kitchen for soup and sandwiches, right?

Ok. Back to my magical memory.

When I close my eyes, I can remember the cold air. I remember my mean sister throwing snowballs at me the entire walk home. And by the time I finally reached our house I could barely feel my lips. My mom would already be home from work for the day & I can still smell the hot soup and freshly sizzled grilled cheese. She use to put so much cheese on that sandwich that it was beyond gooey when we’d cut it in the angle to dip in our soup.

Campbell Soup Company has a very wise kid. Have you met the Wisest Kid in the Whole World yet? He is one wise kid. In fact, he’s so wise - he’s said that ‘there are more ways to dunk than you thunk!’

And yes, oh wise one. There are so many more ways to dunk than you thunk.

Can I share the ways? Goldfish crackers. DUNK. Bagel bites. DUNK. Croutons. DUNK. Pretzels. DUNK. Grilled Cheese sandwiches of course. DUNK. Hot ham and cheese? SLAM DUNK.  Two things have come out of this entire stream of consciousness. One is...I really miss my childhood. Even my mean - snowball throwing sister. Two....I know what’s for dinner.

Maybe I’ll wear my hair in pig tails or a french braid during dinner and allow myself and kids to slurp the soup and string the cheese sandwiches.

What do you like to dunk in your soup?

Or...be brave and as The Wisest Kid in the Whole World!  He knows a LOT.
